Behind the Tech, with Luis Arboleda

Hello Folks! This time around we are featuring Luis Arboleda in our Behind the Tech series. Luis, as you all know, is the Director of Sports Marketing at Sports Agents 502, a premier sports management company in Guatemala. And he has recently collaborated with Expanse to form BSports.

Luis has a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Rafael Landivar University in Guatemala. He later did a few post-graduate and Masters courses in Sports Management and Marketing from University of Barcelona, UPF Barcelona School of Management, University of Pennsylvania and Johan Cruyff Institute.

Technology came into Luis’ life when he started playing on the Atari with his neighbor. He was utterly fascinated with the fact that he could control movements of things and game characters with a remote controller that he could see on TV. Luis believes that he is still learning something new about technology and how it works even to this day.

After college, and a couple of marketing stints at companies like Toyota, Italika and Grupo Imagenes Urbanas, Luis started his long-standing association in sports first as an athlete. Soon he was planning, organizing and directing national and international sports events such as ATP Challenger Gatorade Open, ITF World Junior Tournaments, National Tennis Rankings, V Rotary Golf Tournament, FIFA Futsal World Championship 2000, IAAF World Junior Championships 2012, Juventus Camp Guatemala 2014, Juventus Camp Lima 2014 ,Juventus Camp Quetzaltenango 2014, Boca Juniors Camp Guatemala 2014, VI Futsal Women´s World Cup 2015, #SportBizLatam Guatemala 2017 & 2018, Unleash Your Fitness 2018. He also worked as a volunteer in the Barcelona Zurich Marathon 2012 & 2016, Ironman 70.3 Barcelona 2016 , 6ª Neda el Món Prades Siurana / Open water swim.

Nowadays he works as country representative for Johan Cruyff Institute in Guatemala and El Salvador, and is the co-founder of the Sports Marketing Association of Guatemala. He also works on Sports Economics Research Projects in the Sports Lab at the Pompeu Fabra University.

Luis believes that sport is fundamental to bring about societal change in the countries in the Latin American region. “I believe that if you work in sports as a country brand strategist, you will be able to change many peoples’ lives. That was my motivation behind Sports Agents 502.”

Luis has faced countless challenges, being part of a competitive environment such as international sports. However, apart from professional challenges that he faces and addresses on a daily basis. The biggest challenge is to compete with the cultural or traditional mindset in Latin American countries. “All our countries want Olympic medals and hundreds of high performance athletes, but we don’t focus on training high performance managers. We all want heroes and heroines as the next best example for our children, but for that to happen we must first work hard to change the way each of the federations that currently exist are managed.”

To overcome the issues of lack of professional managers and a professional mindset in sports, Luis is working on educational programs for sports managers. Since 2012, he has been associated with the Johann Cruyff Institute as Country Representative for Guatemala and El Salvador. “We bring more than 52 courses – postgraduate and Masters Programs – to  help current and future sports managers. These programs help them to understand the intricacies of sports management and help them become better managers.”

Luis’ first experience with Expanse was in a talk about how to, and why, apply blockchain technology in Guatemala? “The magic happens when you hear this kind of talks and a lot of questions and ideas come to your mind and then you have this kind of ‘Aha! Moments’ when you realize that the things you hear can be mixed with the with the things you do and see the grand vision laid out before you!” His subsequent discussions with Omar led to the idea that is BSports. His dream is to work hard to build the BSports Smart City.

World Youth Skills Day

The United Nations, at its General Assembly in November 2014, declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day. Expanse is proud to be part of a global recognition program that promotes technical skills. We recognize the need to empower more young people to pursue technology careers, specifically blockchain.

Over the last two years, our Chief Technology Officer, Asim Ashfaq, has hired five interns fresh from college and taught them to code. He puts them through intensive training in his state-of-the-art training center, then assigns them to tasks working on Expanse projects. All of the interns have either stayed on as Expanse developers or were placed with other developments teams.

”All of my interns came fresh to me,” said Asim. “Now they are all pros in their field.”

Many thanks to Asim for his dedication and commitment to teaching our youth how to code!

Behind the Tech with Maryum Saeed

Here’s an article submitted by Jitendra Rathod, newsletter contributing editor.

Hello dear community,

In this edition of “Behind the Tech” we are featuring Maryum Saeed, Expanse’s Project Manager, who is based out of Islamabad, Pakistan.

Maryum has completed her post-graduation in Project Management from Bahria University, Islamabad, with specialization in Innovation and Technology Management. Prior to that she did her Double Majors (4-Year Bachelors Degree Program) in Software Engineering and IT from Forman Christian College University, Lahore, Pakistan.

Coming from an academically-inclined family, Maryum was always fascinated with technology. Growing up in an age that has gadgets around everyone, she wanted to learn what drove those gadgets. While everyone else her age were content using their gadgets, she was more interested to know what was inside them and how they worked.

After graduating in 2016, Maryum started working at the head office of the prestigious Beaconhouse School. She worked on one of the school’s projects on Simulated and Immersive Environments. “That project was the actual beginning of my tech career. I worked there as an intern for 3 months and learnt as much as I could.” At exactly the same time, she had planned to start her Masters in Management Sciences so she started her job and her studies, both at the same time. “I used to work from Monday to Friday for eight hours and on weekends, I had my classes for the whole day. So for the entire duration of my course, i.e., one and half years, I hardly got any time for myself. But I believe those years were crucial to my fledgling career as I got a taste of what it was like to be working in an organization, pretty early in life. And I was still studying. I believe I got a great, early head start.

Maryum worked with two organizations before joining Expanse and since both of these jobs were of a general managerial kind, she had to stay away from technology for some time. After completing her post graduation, she had planned to switch jobs and that is when Expanse happened. “Initially, I found it pretty challenging, but I sort of slipped into the role easily. It was what I have been trained for – technology and project management. After all, challenges are what motivate you to learn more and make you a better professional. And at Expanse, I am working on projects based on cutting edge technology. Maryum has been with Expanse since eight months now and she is “loving every moment of it.”

Maryum’s role at Expanse is of a Project Manager on the various ongoing projects. Her major responsibility is to plan, assign, monitor and deliver the projects on time. She has daily meetings with the developers to assign and monitor their tasks and goals. “Although I am not directly involved in the project from a strict tech point of view, I am accountable for almost everything pertaining to the project. Project managers are the spearheads of a project and they ensure that the project is completed within the specified deadline and gets delivered to the client without any flaws.” Maryum believes that the most challenging part of project management is keeping the client, developers and all the stakeholders on the same page and maintaining the near-perfect balance of time, cost and scope.

When asked about what excites her at Expanse, Maryum is quick to note the constant buzz of anticipation and the sweet sound of creativity in the air. “Ever since I came here, I find something new happening every day.” She feels that there is always something new to learn and that is what keeps one moving ahead.

For Maryum, being focussed on one’s learning curve is vital to individual progress. “For me, this is an almost perfect job as I am involved in managing projects that are based on current technologies – something I am academically trained in. And I constantly keep myself involved in learning as much as I can about new technologies through a lot of reading and by also learning from the developers as they work on the projects.”

Maryum is quite positive about the future of the blockchain technology. “Personally, I believe that blockchain as a technology and all of its its varied facets will play a huge role in the development of both public and private sectors in the coming decade and no matter what people say, cryptocurrencies are here to stay.” She believes that Expanse is working splendidly on some great projects and it is going to have a brilliant future ahead.

Maryum is thankful to the Expanse Management for giving her this opportunity and providing her a progressive environment that is conducive to so much learning. “Everyone is so cooperative and full of encouragement. I couldn’t have asked for a better workplace.” Maryum plans to pursue her studies after a few years of work experience and she is interested in getting her PMP certification. We, at Expanse, look forward to her expertise during her time with us and wish her a great future ahead when she goes about chasing her dreams.

Behind the Tech – Alex Zhao

In this edition of Behind the Tech, we are featuring Yue Zhao, better known as Alex, our China Community Manager, who also heads our brand new Expanse office in China, which we mentioned in the last newsletter.

Alex holds a Masters Degree in Technology Management from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT. Alex fondly remembers his days at the university where he made many friends, enjoyed all of the diverse activities he participated in and more importantly, learned from some of the best teachers and mentors during his degree program. “I think it is vital that we develop an open mind and a receptive attitude during our education years, because once we enter society as an accountable and contributing member, we are constantly learning from our surroundings and the people we encounter. If we are always in the “learning mode” it helps us to adapt to society faster and better. It also helps to use our knowledge to innovate.”

Alex was fascinated by technology during his formative years and has witnessed the transformation that technologies like the internet have brought to our lives. “We are in an era of rapid advances in science and technology. This progress is promoting the overall development of the entire human society.”

A true technocrat, Alex believes that the value of science and technology has been fully demonstrated and it has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on human
civilization―product development, economic reforms, social progress, national military strength and ecological well-being. “The development of science and technology has changed the face of the whole society and affected the destiny and future of mankind.”

Alex came across blockchain technology in late 2014. It caught his attention and he decided to learn more about it. He became a crypto miner. Asked about his first encounter with Expanse, Alex tells this story: “Because I am an ether miner, I was constantly checking out I found EXP, and when I learnt more about it, I found it attractive. I did some more research and found that the Expanse project was great! I joined the Discord channel four months ago and it’s been a whirlwind ride since.”

Alex was made the China Community Manager and Ambassador of Expanse. He handles a small team of five people, and together they manage a large Chinese community that has swollen to in excess of 5000 people. At the beginning of the new year, they set up the Expanse office in Handan City, Hebei Province, some 275 miles south of Beijing, China. Alex hopes that he can invite more IT companies from Chia to visit them and get to know more about what Expanse can offer them. His team will also participate in a few blockchain events which, he believes, will be a good opportunity for some much needed brand publicity.

His paramount responsibility, and challenge, is to get as many IT start-ups to join the Expanse ecosystem. He goes about achieving this mandate in step-wise and strategic manner and is confident that he will have exciting news about new alliances and partnerships in the days to come.

When asked about his views on the future of Expanse, Alex seems pretty confident. “I think with Tokenlab, Votelock and some other great Dapps, Expanse is doing splendidly in demonstrating its worth and value to developers around the world, convincing them that they can build better apps on the Expanse chain.” He is confident that in 2019, Expanse will get at least 10 great Dapp projects in China. “As far as the cryptocurrency market is concerned, I believe that the bear trend should pass soon and we would see good consolidation now.

Alex works closely with Marcia, our Expanse CAO. “Alex is a joy to work with,” said Marcia. “He continues to delight and surprise us with his BIG ideas and enthusiasm for Expanse.”

Key Developer Updates

Chief Developer Christopher Franko and Chief Architect Asim Ashfaq have provided the following updates for various initiatives now underway. Read on to learn details about other major Expanse and Tokenlab projects in development.

PEX Airdrop Timeline

A timeline for the PEX airdrop is now set. As you know, EXPEX (PEX) is a fork of the decentralized exchange standard (DEX), Ox. The contracts for PEX have been launched and the Expanse decentralized exchange is in development. The new exchange will launch on the Expanse blockchain. We are finalizing the software for PEX airdrops to our Expanse and LAB token-holders, now set to commence on August 31, 2018. Watch for the promotion and build-up to the airdrop over the next six weeks.

We are still looking for Ox developers. To that end, we have added 500M PEX to the EXP.Grant fund that we will use to reward the Ox developers who come on board to work on relays. Send a direct message (DM) to Christopher Franko to apply.

EXP Upgrade

EXP has been upgraded to the latest version of eth. According to Christopher Franko, this upgrade includes a LONG list of updates. Everything from 1.8.12 to 1.7.2 was implemented into EXP. Use this link to learn more:

Expanse Faucet

Our Islamabad team is developing the faucet version of Expanse. This will provide the ability for our community to easily test dApps on the Expanse network. This feature, we believe, will be an excellent addition to the Expanse repertoire and a huge step forward in enhancing the usability of the network .

New Gander Release

Thanks to all who provided feedback on the new Gander Explorer during the beta test. The information submitted was very helpful, and we were able to release Gander Explorer V. 1 on July 8. You can access it at

Of note, we are happy to announce that we have established the Expanse node with the DEBUG feature enabled. Through this feature, DEBUG API of the Expanse network is now accessible. This provides the ability to help DEBUG any transaction on the network. This feature is vital in helping dApp developers debug their transactions on the Expanse network and to assist them in rectifying errors or bugs in their code.

We will, of course, show how this feature can be used and accessed so that developers know the status of how their transactions happening on the network. Available in the coming week, statuses shown include:

  • Succeeded
  • Deleted
  • Out of Gas
  • Reverted
  • Pending

The Gander is indeed the backbone of the Expanse.Tech™ network. It shows all of the transaction counts and history for a user’s account, as well as details about the miners’ activities on the Expanse network.

Later on, in V. 2, we will display more great information regarding dApps and smart contracts running on the network. The development of the API documentation for is also underway. It will help developers integrate Expanse into their websites, mobile apps and other applications.

Tokenlab (LAB) Update

Exchange Listings

As we announced last week, Tokenlab™ (LAB) is now listed on the BOA Exchange: HTTPS://BOAEXCHANGE.COM/MARKET/LAB_BTC. The BOA exchange has just launched, and they were anxious to have Expanse, a token with a three-year history of stability, added to their listings. With LAB, they get a utility token with unlimited growth potential and a well-established, committed team and community behind it.

“BOA is a new exchange, but I’m very familiar with their dev team and trust them. It’s a good opportunity for us to grow together,” said Christopher Franko, Expanse Founder.

As we reported earlier, we have an agreement with the Cryptobridge Exchange to list EXP and LAB this month. We are currently waiting for their listing manager to report back with a firm date. We will announce the date as soon as we know it.

In case you missed it, you can read more about our exchange listing journey in our recent blog,

Tokenlab Developer Update

As you know, Tokenlab is about to release a series of self-service solutions to support every aspect of the ICO process. A large milestone was recently achieved when the user interface designs were approved. Developers have now started creating the html and css versions of these pages.

From the backend perspective, developers have already developed APIs that will make it all extremely easy and quick to integrate, followed by a beta release. We will provide ongoing updates about the impending beta release in both this newsletter and our Discord channel. Announcements will also appear on the Tokenlab website, Watch for the dedicated Tokenlab newsletter coming soon.

Meet Luna, the Next Generation Expanse Wallet

After having successfully developed version 1.0 of our Mist wallet, we are now in the process of completely revamping it. Our new wallet is called “Luna.”

Luna provides users the ability to:

  • Generate a wallet
  • Import the wallet via private key /JSON keystore file

Behind the Tech – Asim Ashfaq

Hello guys! This time around, we are featuring Lead Architect Asim Ashfaq in our Behind the Tech series.

Asim holds a Bachelors Degree in Software Engineering from Riphah International University, a 4-year Bachelors Program. Right from his school days, Asim has always been fascinated with technology and decided to learn it more so than trying to make a career out of it. Not content with simply pursuing his education, he decided to test his knowledge and skills by taking up a part time job during his 3rd semester.

After getting his degree and armed with the rich working experience he got out of more than two years working part time job for an IT company, he went on to become a Full Stack Developer and mastered the craft of working both on the backend and frontend of any technology.

Asim entered the crypto sphere in early 2011. He had read about blockchain technology and its truly transformative capabilities. Amazed by the limitless possibilities this technology can afford to any sector and industry, he decided to learn more about it. Over the last seven years, he has directed his veritable skills and deep technological insights to using blockchain technology to create meaningful applications to solve real world problems.

Asim is lost for words when trying to explain his initial experiences with Expanse. He started working for Expanse as a dApp developer. But Christopher saw the potential in him and offered him the huge responsibility of being the lead architect at Expanse. Asim says that Expanse is the best thing that ever happened to him professionally and this experience is getting better with every passing day. He has immense respect and gratitude for Christopher Franko for having faith in him and allowing him to establish a dedicated team for Expanse. “Christopher gave me, and continues to give me, great growth opportunities as a person and as a professional,” says Asim.

Asim currently works as a lead developer and architect at Expanse and works closely with Chris as the domain expert on the various projects on the Expanse platform. He manages a team of 20 people from his office in Islamabad, Pakistan. From UI to the production release, Asim is responsible for all the tech.

Asim is enthusiastic about the research department that they are in the process of establishing. This department will be tasked with exploring new avenues of applications and infrastructure that can be developed on and for Expanse.

On being asked what excites him about Expanse, Asim can barely curb his excitement. “The dream Christopher and Marcia have for Expanse is difficult to put into words. I share with them the vision and mission of Expanse and I am happy that they have allowed me to be part of this wonderful journey. I see Expanse more as an extended family and a place where the opportunities are boundless. All work here is play and I enjoy every moment of it.”

Asim is very optimistic about the future of blockchain technology in general and Expanse in particular. “From where I stand, I see great potential in Expanse in the coming years as we are working on some great projects which will increase the usability of Expanse among the community and by making Expanse as the most sought after dApp platform in the crypto sphere.”

Asim is still in awe of the decentralized technologies and the infinite possibilities they hold to change the way we live. He says he has a lot to learn and much more to achieve in terms of fully appreciating what could be truly done with this technology. “Every single day is as challenging as it is exhilarating. My hunger to learn more about disruptive technologies is insatiable and this is what drives me to achieve greater things for myself and for Expanse,” says Asim, signing off.

Compelling Quotes from Our Discord Community

Here is a collection of compelling quotes posted over the last two weeks in our various Discord channels:

“The interesting thing about crypto is it can exist in many states at once. It can be a currency, property, a store of value, a remittance vehicle, a network.” From Christopher Franko..

“It is difficult for people to not look at the token dollar price because of the years of brainwashing that governments, banks and media have done to us. Most people who have invested in crypto hope to make some profit and then convert back to fiat so the dollar amount is important. It may take decades to fully live in a digital world, if ever….” From a very active community member.

“BTC and all cryptos are so volatile that it’s impossible to use it as a daily currency. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to see cryptos taking over, but it’s a bit of a utopia to think about using crypto as a currency right now.” From another devoted community member.

“Hyperledger is where I’m putting most of my energy and research currently. There’s no substitute for the speed. No data limit either, but you have to come to a happy medium on that since it is coming from a database.” From a community member.
